In meditation, we are not asleep. Nor do we drift along with every thought or dream that comes up. We watch the thought from a detached place, just see it and let it go. It has no emotional impact and is not a spur to action. We do not go over our shopping list or decide we better answer the phone or go over the day’s events.
We consciously and with discipline, dive deeper to where the thoughts look like leaves floating on the surface of the water or bubbles bursting in the air. Meanwhile, we are aware of our breathing, the flow of life within us, and the peace that comes from finding our natural home within. As a result, we do not wake up from meditation feeling groggy the way we would from sleep. Meditation has an energizing effect.
