Astrology,
Saturn, and Past Lives
Many of us know our sun signs and have found that they do fit us very well. If we don't feel that our sun sign is a good match to our personalities and motivations, we can look to our rising sign to see how that influences or colors our sun signs effects.
But the effect of Saturn at the time of our birth may not be as well known. The "house" your Saturn was in at the time of your birth points to areas of learning and growth that need to be accomplished in this lifetime. Through understanding Saturn, you will understand items in this and past lives that need to be resolved and worked through.
You are a powerful, eternal being who chose your parents, your birth time, and everything related to your appearance on this planet. You are not under the influence of the stars, like a puppet whose strings are pulled by universal forces outside of your control. It only stands to reason, therefore, that you chose your own astrological sign. Contemplate this and more in our Astrology, Saturn, and Your Past Lives Session.

What is a Sun Sign?
A sun sign is a particular zone in the zodiac, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, etc., --in which the sun was located at the moment you drew your first breath. This is an exact position taken from a set of tables called an ephemeris, calculated by astronomers.
The sun is the most powerful of all the stellar bodies. It colors the personality so strongly that an amazingly accurate picture can be given of an individual who was born when it was exercising its power. These electromagnetic vibrations will continue to stamp a person with the characteristics of their sun sign throughout their lives.

The Ascendant or Rising Sign
This is the sign of the zodiac that was above your birth location at the time of your birth. The rising sign represents how we approach life, how we meet its challenges, and how we express ourselves to others. (We will not deal with rising signs in this class, but I want to make a distinction between rising signs and the positions of the planets at the time of your birth).
Planets
The position of the planets at your time and place of birth also affects your horoscope. In the case of past lives, the position of Saturn is crucial.
The Importance of Saturn
Saturn, and its relationship to your astrological chart, plays an important role in how our past lives manifest themselves in our present life. The key is understanding how the karma or major lesson to be resolved today is connected to the planet Saturn and its placement and aspects in the natal chart. It is a major indication of:
- How that lesson is to be resolved
- Through which department of life we may expect to have the greatest level of responsibility and stress
Understand it so you won’t repeat it
The description of Saturn’s placement, aspects, and rulerships in the horoscope is most important in the process of uncovering and healing past life experiences. It can be compared to untying a knot in the thread of consciousness, to avoid the continuous repetition of the same old mistakes.
The positive and negative of Saturn
But first it is important to understand just what Saturn symbolizes in personal behavior characteristics. For centuries, Saturn has symbolized:
- Hardship
- Toil
- Drudgery
- Limitation
- Something to fear
Saturn represents gravity. Without gravity, we cannot remain on earth. Without Saturn in the chart we could not be here in a physical form in the school of life. It seems we pick our own particular type of gravity to hold us to the Earth plan, in the form of outer conditions, much like finding sandbags to hold down a helium-filled balloon. The trick is taking on the right quality of responsibility and letting go of the negative condition.
Karma: No one gets away with anything
Karma simply means ‘the law.” In the light of reincarnation, no one gets away with anything! Everything must be balanced, reconciled, and the slate wiped lean. Outer circumstances may teach us many lessons, but true enlightenment comes with full awareness of what must be reconciled with from the past.
Karma and Saturn
In terms of reincarnation, Saturn represents the heaviest karmic burden we bring into this life to resolve. It describes areas of:
- Guilt
- Fear
- Restriction
Saturn and Suffering
One manifestation of Saturn is suffering. This suffering occurs in areas where we have brought forward the greatest guilt from the past.
Saturn: The Inner Parent
Saturn is The Parent within ourselves. A good parent exhibits all the positive Saturn qualities:
- Responsible
- Good disciplinarian
- Gives a sense of security
- Teaches us how to structure life
As we grow up, we continue to give ourselves similar messages. On a Karmic level, those overly judgmental messages take on incredible new dimensions and proportions.
Astrological Houses and Past Lives
The astrological chart is divided into twelve sections, or “houses,” each describing a separate department of life.
In interpreting the astrological chart for purposes of reviewing past lives, it is essential to consider:
- The aspects to Saturn. An aspect is the mathematical relationship of one planet to another,
- Its placement in the chart:
- The house that Saturn is placed in
- As well as the house that Saturn rules

The Sun Signs Through the Twelve Houses
A person's attributes are dramatically affected by the sun's position in the twelve houses. Here is a look at the effect of a sun in each of the twelve houses:
Aries: Sun in the 1st House
Exciting events always seem to be going on when a First House Sun is around. Things start happening when this person enters a room - action constantly follows this character. A healthy degree of self-esteem and bravery also emerges when the chips are down.
Taurus: Sun in the 2nd House
If a person is born with a Second House Sun, the emotions and well-being often hinge on attaining wealth. Or there is a desire to appear as if it's already been achieved. This person is not easily moved into strongly suggested directions and stubbornness will accompany the Sun's energy in this house.
Gemini: Sun in the 3rd House
With the Sun in the Third House, communication skills will be enhanced. Stronger connections with siblings commonly result in an individual making lifelong friends of brothers, or sisters. Habitual short trips, darting in and about the community and rarely staying in one spot for long are traits that are deeply ingrained.
Cancer: Sun in the 4th House
A person born with the Sun in the Fourth House will have compelling domestic connections, or identify with home in a very strong way. Some of the best parents are born with this nurturing chart placement - whether male or female.
Leo: Sun in the 5th House
Having the Sun in the Fifth House will push the creative urges into overdrive. Art, sports, clubs, acting, or anything that requires creativity will be of great interest.
Virgo: Sun in the 6th House
With a Sixth House Sun, this person will either be of service to others, or the opposite will be true. It's common for this person to prefer hands-on work, as opposed to being an administrator, despite the fact that they're gifted with the ability to govern.
Libra: Sun in the 7th House
A person with a birth chart with a Seventh House Sun will spend much of the lifetime focusing on relationships. This person will possess a natural social ease and consequently a great degree of popularity with people.
Scorpio: Sun in the 8th House
Whenever there is a need to transform, this placement of the Sun brings the talent of personal regeneration to the foreground. There is a need to guard against self-absorption and unnecessary rebuilding, as the eighth house can also be prone to extremes.
Sagittarius: Sun in the 9th House
With the Sun being in the Ninth House of freedom, philosophy and education, it's not uncommon to see this person aspire, to become as highly developed as is humanly possible. A love of travel and knowledge of other cultures also comes quite naturally.
Capricorn: Sun in the 10th House
Tenth House Sun people want to be recognized for their work, period. Whatever this person interprets as measurable career recognition, is what will satisfy the inner self. Often gifted with the ability to inspire others with examples of real world success.
Aquarius: Sun in the 11th House - A person born with an Eleventh House Sun, can gain influential friends through associations with clubs, pools or any other organized gathering of people. Although a desire to be at the head of crowd gatherings exists, there is also distinct absence of power lusting.
Pisces: Sun in the 12th House
As the Sun delves into the Twelfth House, people born with this placement, are ultimately just as mysterious as the house itself. The last house of the Zodiac has a reputation for being full of illusions - things often aren't what they seem to be with a twelfth house person. Living in the background, watching and learning is what this character prefers.
