What is spiritual therapy?

9/1/2023

Spiritual therapy is a process that enables people to discover, or find their way back to, who they are as Eternal Souls. Unlike psychotherapy, It is not about coping strategies or life hacks so we can get all that we want while we are alive. It is not about treating the mind and its illnesses through talking about past hurts and traumas and or reliving them. It is not about finding the cause and effect in childhood upsets in this lifetime.

It actually has nothing to do with the thinking mind at all—except to identify the mental patterns that are hard-wired into every brain, causing us anxiety and endless unhappiness. The premise of spiritual therapy is that the ego-mind is a difficult entity to manage if we let it run wild, even if we have the best of intentions of being happy and good. To use the mind to treat the mind is part of the problem and not the solution.

That is why so much of psychotherapy ends up relying on drugs to dull out, or change, emotions. And that is why it is such a failure. (Look around at any big city street, the self-medicating homeless, and you’ll see what I mean). And in certain cases, such as personality disorders, it is completely helpless to effect major changes.

Psychotherapy can teach proven coping strategies for getting on in life. It can make people feel better because they need someone to talk to and tell their story to. Sometimes that is enough for the time being. But it does not address the question, “Why do we want to strive so hard to get on in life when we are one of 8.5 billion people on the planet, who all want the same thing and are willing to kill at times to get it?”

Psychology also does not even approach one of people’s greatest fears: The fear of death. It doesn’t address what happens during death at all, except for such works as Kubler-Ross’s On Death and Dying. In that case too, it is about a series of behavioral and emotional stages we go through, rather that what is the meaning of our death in the context of our lives. Or our lives in the context of death? And if there is any death regarding the Soul, which by definition is eternal. Spiritual therapy tackles these questions head-on.

Spiritual therapy employs certain techniques to guide students into understanding and experiencing the immortal nature of their Soul(s). It tunes them into a place beyond the endless churning of the mind and into an internal space of deep quiet and timelessness. It requires a lot of introspection on the part of the student but it is fun and liberating. It has no side effects and works in proportion to how aware the student is, with much emphasis on the burning desire to find that place of joy, independent of external circumstances.

Once students find their inner light, other forms of therapy are helpful, yet superficial and shallow because they do not answer the question, “Why are we doing all this? Is it just to survive? And is survival of the physical organism enough of a reason for enduring so much suffering?” Spiritual therapy answers with, “You are not the perishable body. Find out who you really are.”

Are spiritual healing and energy work compatible with modern medicine?

1/17/2023

Spiritual healing and energy work may be compatible with modern medicine in certain cases. For example, if you have a broken bone. Modern medicine (and even ancient medicine) can be of service to you. But how quickly you heal, as well as your attitude towards the inevitable pain, depends on energy systems that you tune into.

Pills, cutting, and burning can only take us so far down the healing process. They remove things such as pain, set things such a bones, and. destroy things such as cancer cells. But they can do nothing whatsoever to speed healing. Healing depends on how tuned in we are to the abundant energy of the Universe. It depends on our trust in all of its miraculous systems instead of running and hiding out of fear. Modern medicine feeds our fear to feel pain for even one instant, instead of seeing pain as our friend that is there to guide us further into healing.

Modern medicine is based on fear and the raging need for survival at all costs. It has caused us to view all people as possible vectors for disease. If we want to survive, we should keep away and be very afraid of them. They could make us die. Instead of a friendly face that could add beauty to our lives, we see masked up faces scurrying along, trying to make it through another day. Trying to make it through another day of fear, with some escapes, courtesy of the pharmaceutical industry.

So from that point of view, modern medicine is not compatible with energy healing techniques or approaches. However, I have used spiritual healing approaches to find the right physician when I did need one. I also did metaphysical work and intentions to guide his or her hands. This has worked out very well for me. I have had two knee operations with almost no visible scarring. During the healing period I kept my consciousness in a blissful state through conscious breathing to speed the healing process. Now both my legs are stronger than ever.

I did not use the pain pills because I needed my body to signal when it was time to get up and start moving around. I did not want to fool it into a false sense of where I was into the healing.
Many physicians chose the field of modern medicine because they wanted to help people and to save lives. Coming from that intention, they can be of enormous service. But if people herd to them like sheep and give up any sense of responsibility for their own health, it is also not compatible with energy healing. Energy healing is about determining the root cause, not putting a bandaid on it and suppressing it. It is about looking within instead of finding something “out there” to save us.

The root cause may be any form of imbalance, any form of immoderate behavior that simply showing up at a doctor’s office and saying, “Here doc, make me better,!” will not cure. What is causing us to drink too much, eat too much, smoke too much, or do other self-harming practices? That is what we need to address and that is where energy healing is effective. Modern medicine does not address these issues, nor can it, for these are sicknesses of the Soul and they cannot be seen under a microscope.

What is the connection between eating mindfully and being mindful according to Thich Nhat Hanh in "The Miracle of Mindfulness"? How is it related to Buddhism (in general)?

1/11/2023

Mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment, instead of racing ahead to the next thing that needs to be done. It also means not getting lost in ruminating about the past, especially past suffering. And since Buddhism is all about healing our suffering, mindfulness of the beauty of the present moment brings us peace.

If we rush through our meals because they are an obstacle to getting things done, we turning our eating time into another arena of suffering. We gallop through the meal, barely tasting anything. Shoveling the food into our gullets so we can “get on with it.” Eckart Tolle tells about a meal he had with some accomplished professors. They stopped slamming down the food in long enough to make a verbal point, and then resumed their ravenous slurping.

Or, we can be ruminating about the past. Some past hurt that we felt and continue to feel because we bring it up again and again. We can go through a whole meal this way and not taste anything or appreciate the harvest of the earth. Not even appreciate the skill of whoever prepared it. This type of lack of mindfulness can actually bring on heartburn and other digestive issues. We are not at peace while our body is trying to digest food. We are secreting too much acid or not enough acid and we will feel it shortly thereafter.

The Miracle of Mindfulness is the abundant peace we feel instantly when we just stop with all this ruminating and anxiety about the future—or thinking that the future is better than right now. When we eat mindfully, we are not so intent on filling up the empty hole that we feel. This can help with weight management, because we are not just flinging food down our throats because we feel so empty inside. We don’t run to food for comfort because our mind is quiet enough when we are fully in the Now.

Eating mindfully means tasting each bite. Appreciating the flavors. Feeling gratitude for everyone and everything that made this food possible. It means slowing down and experiencing all the textures, flavors, aromas, and the vibrations of care and love with which they were combined and prepared. This is gratitude for what basically sustains us. It is living with appreciation and attentiveness. The future is not going to bring anything better than right now. And so we are in a state of bliss as we pay attention to the present moment.

What are some of the most important spiritual principles that can be found in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) literature?

10/31/2022

“Let go and let God,” is one of the fundamental spiritual precepts in AA. This is why AA has been the most effective treatment for the destructive patterns of alcoholism, through the years, that I have encountered. We have already relied on our fearful minds and fault-finding intellects to take us to a place where we are out of control. We believe the negative bias of the mind and therefore try to numb it by consuming ever greater quantities of alcohol. Our decisions have taken us down a dead end of ruin and loss.

Willpower didn’t work for us. Therefore, it’s time to let go of the idea that we, personally, are the masters of the universe, can control our self-destructive impulses, and begin to understand the forces that are really “in charge.” Then, we must give up our fearful sense of self and rest in the bountiful heart of the Universe.

AA shows us that thinking we’re capable of total self-management doesn’t work if we believe we are our worrisome, petty minds. They will drive us to drink or other destructive addictions. We must acknowledge and give up the control to a Higher Power—which is the force behind all that is, because it works. AA does not assign a name, such as Jesus or Allah to this Higher Power. This allows everyone access to the idea something larger and wiser than our smaller selves is in control. We’ve allowed ourselves to get out of control anyway, despite our willpower, thus we have become alcoholics, addicts, and dependent on substances to get us through the day.

It is a humbling position, that leads us to recognize that we are in charge of so very little. And that we have messed up and are destroying our health, lives, and the lives of those around us. It takes the burden off of us when we realize that we can depend on something much larger than our little fears and ambitions to break a destructive pattern. Just as we do not circulate our own blood or beat our own hearts or order our stomachs to digest our food, we need to acknowledge that something much greater is at work. It’s delusional to think we can control everything and therefore become very upset when things don’t go according to our plans.

Our plans to go to the bar every day or drink a bottle of whiskey in our room never contributed to our health or abundance or happiness. Why did we think that our plans to quit the habit, based on our own mistaken mental habits, would work out when we are the ones making the decisions? Those decisions were flawed and made us feel more like failures when we couldn’t live up to our resolutions to quit. And so we took another drink to drown out all the mental noise.

The Higher Power is the source of wisdom, love, beauty, and peace. AA tells us to get into contact with the spiritual underpinning of All-That-Is. Stop thinking it’s all on us to fix things. It doesn't work, obviously. Willpower doesn’t work. It doesn’t work because we are forcing ourselves through sheer discipline, which we don’t have when it comes to substances.

It takes surrender. Or as the apostle John said in the New Testament, “I can, of my own self, do nothing . . . because I seek not mine own will but the will of the Father that hath sent me.” Our willpower alone does not work and we are backed up against the wall. The only way to go is to surrender: “Let Go and Let God.”

Who is better, Deepak Chopra or Dr. David Hawkins (quantum healing)?

10/23/2022

Both Chopra and Hawkins are accomplished, visionary thinkers and physicians who incorporate spiritual modalities into bodily healing and mental health. As to which is better, it is up to you if you like one style over the other. Both emphasize the same points and bring out the fact that hard scientists have not explored spiritual avenues enough to be effective in healing or in giving us answers to the deepest questions in life.

In 1995, Dr. Hawkins came out with a "Map of Consciousness,"in his book Power vs. Force. The "Map of Consciousness" brings discoveries from quantum physics and nonlinear dynamics. Deepak Chopra’s book Quantum Healing appeared in 1989. It is about the invisible mind-body connection and how we can alleviate our suffering by understanding this interrelationship and its spiritual component.

Hawkins’ "Map of Consciousness," shows that with each rise in the level of consciousness, the "frequency" or "vibration" of energy increases. In this way, higher consciousness radiates a healing effect on the world. He also tested human muscle response to these vibrations, which stays strong in the presence of love and truth. But negative energy fields induce a weak muscle response.

Chopra’s approach is similar: Human beings can become “metahuman” by reaching a new place of awareness and thus be endlessly healthy and free. He sees the human body as supported by a "quantum mechanical body" composed not of matter but of energy and information. Contact with these higher fields of energy and information brings health, happiness, and benefits to the world as well.

Both Hawkins and Chopra adhere to the fundamental ideas of the world’s great spiritual traditions: Kindness and compassion to everything and everyone, including ourselves; humility; forgiveness; reverence for all of life; and surrender to Cosmic Consciousness (or God). It is a direct path to Enlightenment in which each internal progression of love and integrity uplifts the whole of existence: "We change the world not by what we say or do but as a consequence of what we have become," states Dr. Hawkins.

Chopra also says, “Each of us is a unique strand in the intricate web of life and here to make a contribution.” So it’s not a matter of who is better. They are both great contributors to our understanding of how to alleviate the enormous amount of suffering in the world and in ourselves.

Is enlightenment necessary to be free from suffering?

10/15/2022

Pain and suffering are two different things. We cannot choose whether we have pain or not. And often pain is a warning sign that helps us to diagnose problems. People who are unable to feel pain can die from bleeding to death before they find out that they are mortally wounded. People who cannot feel pain do not survive long.

But suffering is an emotional response to pain. It is within our range of choice as to how we will approach the inevitable. If we have a broken leg, it will hurt. But if we personalize it with fearful questions such as, “Why me?” “Just my luck!” “Life sucks every day for me,” and “How long will it take before I get my life back?”, then we are entering into the endless world of suffering. Fear is the main miserable component of pain.

Enlightened beings’ approach is fearless, for they already know they are eternal beings. Life on the physical plane has both pleasure and pain and much is beyond our control. We cannot expect physical life to be one endless round of ecstasy. Pain can be a great launching point into spiritual awareness. It can be a blessing that lets us know some things must be changed and growth needs to occur to allow for more free-flowing happiness.

Enlightened people take the suffering out of the pain by accepting what is at this moment. They embrace this moment, whatever it contains, and say, “Bring it on. I know I can handle this because I am in touch with something higher than my fearful ego-mind. I know that I am eternal Soul and not this body that changes, decays, and dies.” Pain is not the end of the world for enlightened beings, because they know the world is impermanent anyway.

What happens to pain, when approached with this attitude, is that it becomes more of a heightened sensation, rather than an anxiety-causing difficulty. It happened to me during childbirth. While the women around me were wailing and screaming, I saw that what I was going through was something millions of women before me had undergone and was nothing personal to me. It was Nature working through me. I relaxed into it and did not resist. And the pain was transformed into something else—a very powerful sensation, with no fear attached—with powerfully beautiful results.

Suffering adds further pain to the pain. Resisting causes further trauma. It is easier to take the enlightened approach, which again, is to accept what is and not fight it. Rather, know that Life is perfectly put-together and all is well in the world of the Spirit.

What is cancer from a spiritual perspective?

7/11/2020

From a spiritual perspective, cancer is just another disease that invades the body with the unconscious determination to destroy it. It cannot destroy our Souls and it can never tarnish our Spirits. It is only something that preys on the body, just as microbes, yeasts, fungi, and other invasive agents do. From the spiritual perspective, these physical agents have no real power over us, for we are not these bodies.

Our bodies come and go, are constantly in a state of flux, and are not designed to last forever. It would be a plague on this planet if everyone went on indefinitely. And so we have various agents that are beautifully designed to take us out and make room for others. Cancer is nothing more than one of these agents. It is not the Big Bad Wolf, it is not some malevolent spirit that is attacking us personally.

We are spiritual beings partaking of a physical existence. These bodies are our rental properties to care for with respect and gratitude. But they are not us. These bodies are no more us than the apartments or houses where we live. Therefore, Cancer, though not to be taken lightly, is not to be feared either. For nothing can ever kill the Eternal Soul.

How might philosophy improve physical training?

7/11/2020

Applying philosophy to physical training enables us to enjoy better workouts and make overall improvements. Philosophies such as “No pain, go gain,” are specifically aimed at physical fitness. But we can apply any ancient wisdom to bring more energy and enthusiasm to our workouts.

“No pain, no gain” applies to any undertaking in life if we want to grow. If we want to gain muscle, of course we must push ourselves to failure to initiate the process of growth. And it is the same for anything in life that is worth achieving. Sometimes it hurts when we fail or fall down or exert ourselves. But if we learn from the process, it can only increase our spiritual and mental strength.

The Stoic philosophers have great relevance for athletes. They believed we could live a virtuous life by implementing a fitness routine based on discipline and self-reliance.They didn’t believe in lifting weights just to look good. They advocated lifting weights to lead a better life, according to the way of Nature.

The Stoics believed in keeping our bodies in good working condition and ready for action. One of their primary principles is that life is short. Therefore live your best life by building and maintaining your best body. The Stoic philosopher Seneca said, “. . . there are short and simple exercises, which tire the body rapidly and so save our time; and time is something of which we ought to keep strict account.”

When we apply a workout philosophy to our fitness routines, we are more apt to stick to the program. Random workouts based on how we are feeling at the moment, rarely produce consistent results. But if we go in with philosophy behind us, not only are our workouts more meaningful, they are also more effective.

Why do people let someone that is paralysed (full body) stay alive? Wouldn’t be it better to end their suffering?

12/18/2019

Everyone, no matter what their physical state, is a valuable Soul and is capable of expressing love and intelligence. This is because, as Tielhard de Chardin said, “We are not human beings having a spiritual experience; we are spiritual beings having a human experience.”

This means that no matter what your physical state: Paralyzed, old and decrepit, young and green, sick or well, the body is not who you are. You are a soul who happens to be inhabiting a body this time around.

Nobody has it easy in the body for any length of time. Even babies bang their heads and fall down when they learn to walk. If we determined who should live or who should die based on their physical perfection or lack of suffering, not many humans would be left to exterminate. And who would make this decision? Just because someone is suffering for the moment doesn’t mean it won’t get better for them even in an hour.

No matter what condition our bodies are in, they are the homes of our Souls and important to our Soul’s journey. Paralyzed people like the scientist Steven Hawking, the artist and author Christie Brown, and actor Christopher Reeve continued to shine their light in the world and provide inspiration for others.

How does psychology define its self today compared to the past?

12/8/2019

Viewing the huge amount of mental illness in our homeless population, learning of the school shootings by kids on drugs meant to treat mental illnesses, and knowing of the widespread number of people on anti-depressants as they trudge through their unhappy lives, I say that psychology today is a huge failure. It has resorted more and more to drugs that have limited effect:

  • People adapt to these drugs and need add-ons or more
  • People who need to take anti-psychotic medication the most do not have the mental stability to be consistent in taking them
  • Drugs are masking the underlying issues that are causing the maladaptive behavior

I understand that when a person is in a violent psychotic episode, drugs are important and necessary. But everyday drug use as a substitute for teaching and learning coping skills is a abdication of responsibility.

One of the problems is that psychology is dealing with our ego minds, which will always be dysfunctional. And the more we delve into it, the more entrenched in it we get. Our mother forced us to eat carrots and now we hate the color orange. Does it make us any happier or more fulfilled to know this after years of analysis? This is why the next step for psychology will be to bypass the human ego-mind altogether and allow people to find pathways to the one part of themselves that is not dysfunctional: Their Eternal Soul.

Insanity is believing everything the dysfunctional ego mind churns out. If we cater to this mind and live in it, we will be insane and act insane. Look at the planet today and see where the functioning of the ego mind has brought us. Therefore, psychology today, if it is to be at all effective, instead of a pill-pushing cop-out, must find ways to bring people in touch with their Souls, where there is always peace.
