Character has to do with moral choices. Hundreds of years ago, it was important for people to develop character, as opposed to personality. Character meant good habits, such as not gambling or wasting time. It meant that a person took responsibility for her or her actions and could be counted on in a difficult situation to make the wise decision. Character is about the inner person’s ethics and integrity.
Personality came to the forefront more recently, when media, such as radio and TV required people with snappy, upbeat ways of engaging the public to buy products. It didn’t matter if the person behind the voice and the sunny smile was a sociopath or a deadbeat. If they made people think they were amazing, and stirred public interest, that was enough. Many psychopaths have great personalities yet their characters will lead you down a path of destruction. Personality is about the externals of a person that we see and hear.
