A materialist is a person who believes that nothing exists except matter and its movements and modifications. Yet when you look beneath the surface of matter, into it’s atomic structure, you find particles and waves in empty space. What appears to be solid matter is a construct of our perceptual equipment, such as eyes, ears, and the sense of touch.
In other words, materialism is a belief system based on insubstantiality, even though it purports it to be solid.
Consciousness does not appear in physical, solid form. Therefore, any approach to consciousness from the premise of materialism is doomed to fail. They are almost opposite states of awareness, yet both depend on the individual perceiver.
Materialism is a belief system that is as fallible as any other. To use it as a tool to decipher consciousness will never work because consciousness is not physical, it is spiritual.
