Imagination breaks away from what is etched in stone. But if we are stuck in a position that what we already know is right, we can’t access our imagination. Dogmatic religions are based on, “We know this. This is right. You are wrong. Anything outside of our system is wrong.” This kind of thinking does not allow for the free play of imagination, of possibilities, of what could be. Instead we are stuck with what we have always done.
Societies that are tied to old knowledge are also stunted in their inventiveness and scientific contributions to the planet. This is because scientific progress actually depends on imagination. This is what Einstein said about the precedence of imagination over knowledge:
“Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we now know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”
