It is a misunderstanding that if we do this and that, follow such and such path, and we do everything the “right” way according to some dogma from thousands of years ago, we we reach enlightenment. This is how the ego-mind interprets enlightenment—as one more thing to get if you just know the right formula, so you can control everything.
Enlightenment is not an end result anyway—it is ongoing, creative, free-flowing and endless. So many people think that if they do enough penances they will be enlightened. No, it is not something out there to be achieved in the future. It is a continuous awareness and appreciation of the now, the present moment and nothing else.
For the Grace of God to visit you, you must be an empty vessel—not full of preconceived notions about what an enlightened being looks or acts like, or all the acclaim you will receive for being so wise. Empty, humble, quiet, listening with all your heart.
